Poll: Google Earth Tutorial

Ron here. I am Tom's brother. I maintain their blog while they are at sea. I also develop and maintain the technical underpinnings of this blog.

Last night I was talking to our mom about this blog. In particular, we discussed the Google Earth feature. I discovered that she was not not aware of many of the cool things Google Earth can do. Nor was she aware of the items I had placed into the Sandpiper overlay to take advantage of these features.

So we spend an hour on the phone as I stepped her through a tutorial. I showed her how enable features, optimize settings, and most important, how to use the the Sandpiper overlay to experience the voyage. Mom was very impressed on how fun it was. When used properly, It almost feels like you are there on board the Sandpiper.

In addition to the Sandpiper stuff, I also showed her how to take advantage of the information that millions of users world wide have contributed to Google Earth to enrich the experience.

We discussed the idea of me creating a tutorial to show vistors how to use Google Earth to use and enjoy the Sandpiper overlay. She begged me not to get to technical or go overboard, like I did when I decided to explain the tradewinds.

So I'm going to ask here. Shall I write up a tutorial? Please leave a comment on this post and let me know. Thanks!
Ron

Ron,

I welcome (and, at times look forward to) your observations and tech speak. It often helps copmplete the "picture".

Thx for the effort!

Ron, Mom Pat Sherman here---If you did the tutorial I think Amy's Grandma would sure appreciate it. After I check the blog I then do Google Earth and get a kick out of seeing where Sandpiper is and how far they've sailed. One more thing! Thanks for adding the links to the islands and others pictures. If we can't see Tom and Amy's pictures yet, at least we have an idea as to what they've seen. This was a great idea on your part! I love your techie work!
